Centrica Energy is the trading and optimisation arm of Centrica plc, and a leading provider of energy risk management and optimisation services to business in addition to managing commodity risk and providing wholesale market access for the Centrica Group.

We trade power, gas, liquified natural gas and green certificates, connecting energy producers, suppliers and offtakers in wholesale energy markets. We are one of the largest renewable asset managers in Europe, with over 16.5GW of capacity under contract, of which more than 85% is renewable assets.

At Centrica Energy, we are recruiting for a Market Risk Analyst who will be able to confidently analyse and monitor market risk, and recommend market risk measurement methodologies, processes and policies whilst having close daily interaction with the front office and business units across the division.

Support in creating a strong risk presence and promoting risk discussion on the trading floor, alongside building strong relationships across our Energy Commodity Trading business, mostly centred around the trading activities in our Renewable Energy Trading & Optimisation business.

The role is based out of our central Aalborg office.

The role

  • Create a strong risk presence and promote risk awareness on the trading floor, alongside building strong relationships across the business – including colleagues within our London office
  • Identify, assess, report and monitor market risk across a diversified commodity portfolio which includes analyzing trading / hedging strategies and assessing material weaknesses or overlooked risks
  • Produce market risk reports and ad hoc market risk analysis. Confidently answer questions relating to market risk reports. Reconcile and prepare commentary on movements in market risk measures, escalating potential market risk issues to manager
  • Provide timely risk insights into the trading portfolio to senior management, through being a local point-of-contact for running scenario analyses within the applicable market risk frameworks
  • Develop timely market risk analysis, using simulation based modelling and other quantitative methods, e.g. stress scenarios and path risk assessments
  • Work with relevant business teams to implement and test new business and product frameworks. Integrate changes and deliver improvements to market risk policies, processes and systems
  • Maintain and share strong knowledge of trading portfolios and stay abreast of developments in the energy markets.

Who we’re looking for

  • Degree in quantitative finance, STEM discipline or closely related subject
  • Understanding of market risk management and risk methodologies such as VaR, PaR, Stress Testing and Option valuation theory.
  • Insight into commodity risk management issues, requiring risk diagnostics and sophisticated analysis
  • Strong mathematical and modelling skills required, including developed IT skills such as advanced Excel (VBA) or a programming language (Python/MATLAB)
  • A strong independent mind in executing responsibilities alongside maintaining effective working relationships across the organisation
  • Confidence, presence, resilience and determination to succeed in a dynamic and demanding business environment
  • Excellent attention to detail, with good problem solving and root cause identification skills
  • Ability to interact and communicate at all levels.
