As we reflect on #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, we caught up with Performance and Talent Director, Victoria Belkhyate, who shares valuable insights into the apprenticeship journey, highlighting the skills required and the benefits of hands-on training. Victoria also offered practical advice for aspiring candidates on how to stand out in the application process.
Welcome to ‘In Conversation With…’ Victoria! Please tell us a bit about your career journey.
" I had my first job at the age of 14 years in a barber shop and this is where I unlocked my energy for discovering hidden talent. Hearing people sharing their stories of what they love to do, where they work, their future ambitions. It inspired me. I made the decision to leave school after my A Levels and pursue a career in the corporate world.
I joined Centrica two years ago to lead Performance & Talent across the business. The thread throughout my career has been to discover hidden talent and I’ve had the pleasure of working for a variety of diverse organisations to turbo-charge their talent strategy.
As Performance & Talent Director, my role includes shaping, amplifying and embedding Performance & Talent best practices, establishing the Group Talent and ensuring we have an intentional and future-focussed strategy in our philosophy and approach. Day to day, this involves accelerating planning conversations starting with our most senior leadership and identifying opportunities to support colleagues to reach their career ambitions through development plans. It also spans Emerging Talent which includes our internships, graduate, apprenticeship and pathway programmes."
Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
"I am an “a-holic”: video-a-holic, choc-a-holic and shop-a-holic!"
Why do think apprenticeships are a good option to consider for anyone wishing to start a new career?
"I think apprenticeships are a fabulous space to earn and learn. There are so many options available to reach your career ambitions through an apprenticeship at various levels of education, all the way up to Bachelor and Master's levels. You have the safe space to learn the theory and then put this into practice in the workplace through fantastic mentor support.
Overall, I’d say apprenticeships are a versatile, role focussed and effective way to build a skilled workforce and support career development."
As Performance & Talent Lead, what types of qualities do you look for in new talent?
"Everyone has talent, and the unique ability to maximise and showcase their talents in different ways. There are a few qualities that I look for in a candidate - I’d say the ability to build good relationships, being curious by asking lots of questions, problem solving and bringing your energy are key – if you love what you do, your passion will shine through!"
What's your one killer tip for interview practice?
"Be deliberate in your story and what you can bring to the role. What is your USP? Spend time focusing on this and the value you could bring, even if it’s not a part of the role today – it may be needed tomorrow."
What's the weirdest response you've heard at an interview from a candidate?
"I once asked a question in an interview “If you were to design a t-shirt with 3 words to describe yourself, what would be the 3 words?” The answer was “I don’t wear t-shirts.”
What’s the most stand out thing a candidate has done in an interview to help them secure a role?
"The individual took charge of the interview, effectively highlighting their skills and capabilities in every answer. They acknowledged the limited time but ensured it didn’t prevent them from showcasing their full range of experiences. They used the interview as a “stage moment” to shout out about all of their achievements."
Why is it important that other organisations should consider taking on apprentices?
"I’d say it’s important for many reasons - apprenticeships allow people to learn in a less traditional way and therefore welcomes people at any point in their career. They allow for skill development, encourage employee retention, diversify the talent pipeline and address skill shortages. It’s a valuable opportunity for businesses to invest in their future workforce and enhance their competitive edge."

Are there any challenges to consider when undertaking an apprenticeship?
"Yes, there can be a few challenges to consider such as your work-life balance and time management. It’s important to ensure that there is space and time committed to focussing on learning and gaining practical experience alongside being aware of time frames to meet apprenticeship deadlines."
What advice would you give to anyone considering an apprenticeship?
"Overall, apprenticeships are a fantastic way to gain practical experience and develop valuable skills for your career. Some key pieces of advice would be:
- Research Thoroughly: Understand the different types of apprenticeships available and choose one that aligns with your interests and career goals.
- Stay Committed: Be prepared to balance work and study and stay dedicated to your learning and development and remind yourself why you are doing it.
