Centrica plc today announced it has secured a 30 per cent interest in an Egyptian licence block, as part of its strategy to secure future supplies for its British Gas customers from a range of international sources.
Centrica will join Sipetrol and PTTEP as a partner in the Rommana block, which was awarded in the EGAS 2006 International licence round. Sipetrol, which has existing production operations in the Western Desert area of Egypt, will be operator. The Rommana exploration block is located in North Sinai, with an area of approximately 6200 km2.
Jake Ulrich, Managing Director of Centrica Energy, said: "Participation in Egypt builds on our exploration strategy and broadens our approach to securing future supplies for our British Gas customers.
"We have also currently made bids in the UK, Norwegian and Trinidad licence rounds and now look forward to considering future opportunities in Egypt."
