Hi guys, to introduce myself… My name is Jordan and as the title of this blog suggests, I am currently undertaking a Summer Placement in Finance.
I’ve been working here at Centrica for roughly a month now, so I’m halfway through and thought this would be a good time to reflect and share my experiences with you.
The Work
Let’s start with what I actually do. From week one I was given responsibility on genuine tasks; very unlike a stereotypical “tea & coffee person” internship. For example, I’m currently working in a team of four tasked with improving the cost efficiency of our Operational Expenditure across the whole of British Gas.
With regards to how you go about the work, they take the view of “We’re going to set you a task, let’s see what you can do. If you struggle, don’t worry we’re here to help you.” The managers know you’re still at university and are unlikely to be the finished article just yet. My line manager has countless emails in her inbox from me and not once has she failed to respond with help, support and enthusiasm to boot.
The People
As part of the Placement you gain exposure to senior members of the team. In my first few meetings my main worry was making sure I didn’t waste their time, however I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how most of the people I’ve met, whether Director or graduate level, have taken a genuine interest in me. It is quite common for me to go into a meeting and start off with “business” stuff and for them to say, “Hold on a minute, that isn’t how we work around here. Introduce yourself and tell me more about you before we go into the work aspect”.
The Office
Generally the office is quite relaxed. The offices tend to be open plan which is nice as it gives you an opportunity to bounce ideas off each other and someone is always nearby and willing to offer help. There is also a constant emphasis on team work, and you quickly feel like you’re part of a close-knit group.
Overall, I can say that I have really enjoyed my Placement with Centrica so far, and would strongly recommend it.
So, all that’s left to say now is best of luck in your application!
