Before joining Centrica Storage Limited (CSL) as an Operations Apprentice, Daniel Gay was a Royal Marines Commando for just over five years. He shares what inspired him to make the career change – and why he’d encourage others to do the same.
'A lot of my friends and family work in the energy sector and it has always intrigued me, especially the role of a process operator.
When I saw the advert for the apprenticeship, I thought this would be a perfect transition into the field and becoming a process operator, especially with CSL. I had always heard great things about CSL, they have great company values and job prospects and I know they are an inspiring company to work for. When I heard I had got the apprenticeship I couldn’t wait to get started.
The best highlight of my experience so far was the day we spent at the Easington Gas Terminal. It was great to meet people currently in the role I will be doing and learn about what a day in the life of a process operator looks like.
"Without any hesitation I would highly recommend applying for an apprenticeship with CSL to anyone that is considering it. The network of people is so supportive and really friendly. I think I am a prime example of someone who has totally changed career paths and is thoroughly enjoying every minute of it"
The biggest challenge I have faced so far is definitely coming back into full time education. Having been out of full-time education for 11 years, I knew it would be challenging for me. The transition back into studying has been smooth, the tutors are helpful and make every lesson interesting, which made me realise I have nothing to worry about.'
I can’t wait to get started as a qualified process operator, the things I am looking forward to the most are becoming part of a great team and progressing my career with CSL.
Without any hesitation I would highly recommend applying for an apprenticeship with CSL to anyone that is considering it. The network of people is so supportive and really friendly. I think I am a prime example of someone who has totally changed career paths and is thoroughly enjoying every minute of it.
