With 21,000 dedicated colleagues, we’ve the passion and reach to make a world of difference in our communities.
We’re focusing on three key areas - helping people with their energy today, building a more sustainable energy future for tomorrow, and making a big difference in our local communities everyday.
Towards this, we support a range of organisations with money and expertise including through our goal to give 100,000 days by 2030.
Below, you'll find some examples of how we’re working with our communities.
British Gas Energy Trust
The Trust is an independent charity funded solely by British Gas, to help tackle fuel poverty.
The Trust funds around 41 independent advice centres and charities at the heart of communities, while directly providing grants and energy vouchers to those who are struggling with their energy bills. The Trust additionally manages the British Gas Energy Support Fund, set up to support customers during the energy crisis. In total since 2004, we've provided nearly £200 million to the Trust which has helped more than 700,000 people. Find out more here.
Energy for Tomorrow
Our impact fund provides grants and expert advice for community initiatives that deliver affordable and sustainable energy solutions.
With money generated from solar panels we installed at nearly 270 schools over a decade ago, the fund now focuses on helping communities transition to net zero with targeted regional campaigns across the UK. Our fund has £600,000 to spend annually, with grants of up to £100,000 available. To date, we’ve helped more than 36 community initiatives across the UK.
The Big Difference
We're making a big difference by supporting local causes that colleagues and communities care passionately about.
Having moved from a national to a colleague-led local charity approach in the UK during 2022, nearly 5,000 colleagues voted to focus our efforts on tackling poverty, supporting health and helping children & young people across the communities where we live and work. By inspiring colleagues to volunteer and fundraise while providing £2 million in donations and matched funding, we helped around 1000 local good causes in 2023.
Focus Ireland
To help prevent family homelessness, Bord Gáis Energy has been working with Focus Ireland since 2015.
With more and more people facing homelessness in Ireland, we extended our partnership out to 2025 and committed €4.4 million to Focus Ireland over the course of our partnership. By the end of 2023, colleagues had volunteered hundreds of hours and fundraised over €270,000 for the cause. This has helped around 8,400 family cases who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their home.
